Awaiting The Apocalypse "At War With The Dead" - Album Review

Written by Cole Baity:

Before I start this review, I would like to say before I knew this wasn't I signed band, I thought they sound like a huge signed band, which surprised me. Awesome band in my opinion, so let's get to it...

1. A-TAP
This track is definitely a good start to the album. My absolute favorite part of this song is that they manage to keep it heavy, but also stay away from the typical metal bands that stick to the lowest frets on the guitar/bass. The chords sounded good throughout the song and still kept a heavy sound, good job. The vocals are excellent. They bring great intesity and the highs and lows come together to make an original and fantastic sound. In my opinion, the vocals are a good example for other bands. The only problem I have with this song is the transition at 00:46. I would suggest to stretch that transition out a tad bit longer so that the tempo change isn't so abrupt. Overall, great song.

2. Falling Down (D.M.F.)
This is one of the best songs I have heard in quite some time. You can tell when bands just try to make everything sound cool and when they know what they're doing musicially and these guys know what they're doing. I love the intensity and back-bone that this track brings. Every single piece of this band pulled together quite nicely and prodcued, in my opinion, a master piece with only one small flaw. Again, the tempo change was a little abrupt at 2:50ish, but not a real noticeable thing, easily fixable.

3. J-Town Kool-Aid
Again, great intensity coming from this track. Stayed away using just lower fret "chugging" the entire song which is fantastic. The vocals and the drums stood out the most to me in this one. The vocals in this are very powerful and is definitely a great addition to this band. The drums really brought a little extra to the table and showed that they aren't just for the rhythmn. All-in-all, great song.

4. They Rise You can tell that plenty of work went into making this song. Truly a good song. This track used a good mixture of slams and breakdowns which is a great thing to know how to balance. Everything about this song was amazing to me. Everything stood out and showed that they know what they're doing and that they are GOING to make it big in the music scene. Yet again, another great song.

5. I Will Beat You To Death To Prove My Love To You
This track is very catchy. I love the overall tempo and feel to this song. One of my album favorites for sure. The guitars really came together well and really did an awesome job at setting a great tone for the lyrics of the song. The vocals also again really stood out to me. Thw low vocals really hit home in this one and brought more fierce intensity. Nice work. I heard no flaws whatsoever in the song. Everything flowed well and it is an awesome addition to the album. Nice work.

6. Therapist This track brings out a good vibe straight from the beginning. This band still manages to be creative, original, and non-repetitive this late in the track and I one hundred percent applaud these guys for that. Everything came together really well and created a good melody and still kept to the genre. Also, the guitars stood out more in this. They really showed more of their skill and I thoroughly enjoyed this track.

7. The Battle At Yonkers
Again, strong intensity and every piece of the band wrote this track masterfully. They keep a good tempo throughout and when it does change, it's fairly smooth and sounds good to the ear. Definitely a song to be sent in to be checked at by record labels. Again, great work guys.

8. Below The Influence
This song still brought intensity but just doesn't stand out to me as much as the other tracks. It lacks a certain "oompf" if you will that all the other songs do. Still a good track to listen to and definitely one to keep on the album. Again, the guitars worked well together and worked well with every other aspect of the band. Keep up the good work.

9. The Battle Of Hope
I really "dig" this song. To me, it has a more relaxed feel and tone to it and I think it compliments the album well to have a song like this. I thoroughly enjoyed the open guitar riffs which made up the entire mood for the rest of the track. Good melody, yet still have the ability to stay to genre and that's a great quality in a band.

All-in-all fantastic album and definitely worth the listen. Stay tuned for theses guys because they WILL get big. Promise.

Your Captain Is Dead - Review

Written by Cole Baity:

Your Captain Is Dead Review

This is an up-and-coming, five-piece band from Oregon. Well, without further ado, here's the offical review of Your Captain Is Dead.

1. Intro & Suicide Watch
The intro is a little main stream as for the audio clip and lacks a little originality. What I would change in the beginning of this track is to take out the audio clip and keep the breakdown/slam part in the beginning. Also this part would stand out more if the drums would add more back-bone to the intro. This song does save itself a bit when it starts picking up mid-way through. The drums actually stand out and aren't just in the background. The vocals are the soul reason this song didn't die off. The low vocals actually caught my attention more than anything about this song. There is real talent with those vocals, and the highs contrast with them well. The majority of this song needs some revision. This track is pretty much a very long breakdown, which lacks originality. Also, I would take out the clean vocals. They really contradict the deeper sounding, low vocals and ruin the more hardcore aspect of this song.

2. Life Into Motion
This song really, in the beginning really pushes forward and bring plenty of intesity. All the parts came together fairly well and really brought out a good aspect of the band. The transition into the next part of the song was alittle sloppy and a little abrupt, which needs a small fix, no biggie. I feel that all of the clean vocals for this band should be taken out because they truly contradict the great intensity of the highs and lows. I would say that this band should stick to a more deathcore type of style rather than a post-hardcore style. It would suit them better. This song also needs revision but it's a step up from the first track. Just needs a few transition changes and a little clean-up on a few parts, but one a few particular parts the entire band pulled together perfectly and brought out that little glimpse of that intense, hardcore band I could see this band being.

3. "If You Don't Like Lighthouses, You Suck!"
This song is all-around better than the other two songs. The guitars brought out a great rhythmn and the drums did a great job complimenting them. I enjoyed the "two-step" parts in this track, good addition to it. As I said before, I would suggest taking out the clean vocals, but the highs and lows still impress me. Great vocals through and through. This track is a better representation of what this band should sound like. Good, melodic heavy riffs with supporting drums and great vocal support. This song is definitely the best out of the three. Good job on this track guys.

In summary, there is definitely room for improvement. But all-in-all, this band has potential to go places and get big. Just needs some work on finding their true sound that really suits them. Keep it metal guys and good luck.

*SIDE NOTE* This is not meant to offend but rather review over past music and give tips for improvement, from one musician to the next.

As The Fallen Rise - EP Review

Written by Cole Baity:

As The Fallen Rise is a fantastic up-and-coming band from the Indianapolis area, and they are here to bring everything they have into the metal scene. In the grand scheme of things, I would not change the lineup or the style of writing that these guys bring to the table in this EP. The EP consists of 3 songs and lasts about 11 minutes. So, here's the breakdown of each song.

1. Realization
The first song on the EP and they jump straight into it, and they don't hold back. This song has a good mix of all of the pieces of the band. The drums aren't over-powering, but they get the job done and consistently keep a good beat while still pushing his talents forward. Both guitars did a great job harmonizing and did an even better job of keeping a good balance between too much palm-muting and too little. Also, they (along with the rest of the band) did an almost perfect transition towards the middle of the song. I personally dislike the use of keyboards in Hardcore bands, but they manage to use the keyboard at the appropriate times and it doesn't throw off the tone of the song like most other bands do, so great job on that part. The vocals. All I have to say is that everytime I hear these vocals I get pumped. On this, and the rest of the songs, he uses a great mixture of high-pitched and lower pitched screams and he does them well.

2. Premonition
The vocals, again, great job. Again, good mix of highs and lows and used at the perfect intervals in the song. The opening guitar riffs almost sounded repetitive but came back and added a little something different to it and changed it up, so nice job on keeping it heavy but not repetitive. I love about 00:30 in on this song. Silence, then, "STAND YOUR GROUND". It brings a bit of power, if you will, to this track and is amazing to hear live. They stay with the melodic theme that they have and it serves them well. Drums, again, not over-powering but certainly serving it's purpose and keeps me pumped. Keyboard uses a good mix and doesn't sound too "dubsteb/techno" which is rarely pulled off so, hats off to you.

3. Reconstruction
The entire opening to this track is perfect for a good ol' fashion. bloody, mosh pit. Heavy and in your face, perfect start to an ending track. This track really stands out from the rest and really hits home the whole melodic tone. Way to stay true to genre. Vocals really stand out in this(Really the entire track) one to me. Good mix and at appropriate times, and doesn't have a shy nature to it which just pushes for more power during the heavier riffs and the highs compliment the more melodic riffs. Drums again, consistent, and still do a great job.

This entire EP was very well written. Heavy, but true to genre. Great vocals on all aspects. Guitars bring the intensity effectively and throw in original progressions which is always a plus. The drums do their job well, and don't over-power the rest of the pieces of the band. Again, one of the only bands I know that pulls of a keyboard and does it well. This EP is a good representation of this band and I hope to see more stuff like this in the future. Great work guys.
